One of three modern dancers inspired by Matisse’s paintings, The Walk captures the subtle gesture in the turn of the foot and motion of the arms. Matisse painted numerous versions of this figure. He may have played a critical role in the “invention” of or the excitement about modern dance.

A fourth figure in this group (not shown) is a leaping male dancer called Pathetique.
