Thomases created this group of sculptures after meeting a contemporary painter in China. He purchased one of her paintings of bamboo with writing next to the stalks and leaves. Watching her work, he was mesmerized by the action in her brush and by the brush strokes on the paper. He transmuted her calligraphy into anthropomorphic figures in motion.
