This highly regarded English painter often used photographs as inspiration. For this self-portrait, he made funny faces at the camera in a photo booth. He used the photos to paint a tortured, penetrating portrait. In addition to this bust, Thomases has created three figurative sculptures using Bacon’s paintings. They form a special group. The Lovers, a high polished piece that is 9" long, is usually displayed by itself but can be hung from a hidden hook inside this bust, somewhat akin to Bacon’s hung slabs of beef.
